“To claim”, to come into possession of; to act as receptacle or container for”. This article urges us to take control of our education and “claim” it and make it ours, not to just receive it! Rich gives the reader such an insight to the limitations and setbacks that women & African Americans in the 70′s had to deal with on an everyday basis. Not only were they fighting for their equal rights, but each group had to deal with unfair treatment and sexual harassment.
I believe Rich hopes that by sharing this information with the world, she can empower women to claim what is rightfully theirs, and don’t be so passive about their lives, take charge and be successful and all they can be no matter what stands in their way. Women & African Americans alike have come so far in this battle for equality. I hope this progress doesn’t stop here in 2011. The sky’s the limit as to what today’s strong independent women can achieve!
