Claiming an Education / Adrienne Rich

Adrienne Rich’s article, “Claiming an Education”, argues that one should claim their education instead of simply receiving one. Rich describes claiming an education as “taking as the rightful owner” as opposed to receiving an education, meaning “to act as a receptacle or container for”. Her article not only stresses the importance of obtaining your own education, but she also argues that we must take responsibility for and towards ourselves as women; this meaning refusing to let others do our thinking, talking, etc.
We must not fall for ‘shallow and easy solutions’, but instead work hard for what we truly want and deserve. What I agreed with most in Rich’s, “Claiming an Education” is that one will perform much better if they act upon opportunity and seek their education instead of believing that it will just ‘come to them’. To imagine not having this opportunity to obtain an education encourages me to take more responsibility. I feel that if one truly wants the most out of  life, that they will work harder and seek it instead of waiting for it to happen on its own.
