This poem was an eyeopener because I have never felt that being a white American was so important. Nellie Wong is an amazing women for simply having the courage to describe how she felt about her “flaws” and sharing it with everyone. She says that she felt insecure about her “darkness” and that all she ever wanted was to be white. She wore pale makeup and cotton dresses to try to fit in, but her efforts were disregarded when people asked if she was every race other than Caucasian. I know that typically everyone strives to be better in some shape or form, but I have never felt like she did. I personally feel that noone should ever be looked down on or ashamed of his or her race. I hope that in the future we all learn to love and embrace who we are because we cannot control our race, culture, or appearance.
