Short Skirts and Breast Juts: Cheerleading, Eroticism and Schools/ Bettis and Adams(2006)

When reading this article I became extremely frustrated with the continual comments about cheerleaders being sexual in the way they dress. Personally this hits home with me due to the fact that I have grown up cheerleading and dancing and am now coaching a cheerleading squad of my own. The fact that people judge cheerleaders based on their length of their skirts is ridiculous. I do not see anyone judging football or baseball  players for their ridiculously tight pants that show every indentation on them. Being around this sport most of my life I have seen it all. Of course you get the occasional girl who wants to cheer because of the attention from others but about 90% percent of the time it is the love for cheering. The persona that has been placed on cheerleaders is the dumb blondes that cannot find a way out of a bag is entirely false. There are those types of girls everywhere, not just in cheerleading, you cannot be stupid when building a 10 feet high pyramid or memorizing 5 minute routines. Personally I would love to keep dumb as far away as possible! Cheerleading is a sport and should be respected more than it currently is. If you have never participated in it then you should not down it before you try.

  1. Excellent criticism of this article and for pointing out the athleticism, problem-solving, and athleticism that goes into successful cheerleading.
