When I Was Growing Up: Nellie Wong (1981)

When I Was Growing Up is a poem written by Nellie Wong about her struggles with growing up as a minority in the United States. This writing brings myself information to ones thoughts that i really would never think of. Nellie longed to be white and a part of the “norm”. Her feelings of being out of place and not fitting in from the way she looks and the way she feels not good enough is the message through the piece.  I do not understand how one feels so out of place. This poem showed how one wants to be the exact opposite of themselves. If one wants to fit in as much as Wong I feel extremely sorry for that person and the actions others brought upon her to make her feel that way. Having to live where you are uncomfortable and want to be accepted constantly cannot be fun nor healthy.
