In this article, gender as it related to the online world is discussed.  Gender online is different than gender in the real world because being online gives people the option to choose what gender they would like. Gender swapping and cross-dressing online gives people a new outlook on gender according to social construction. However, when people choose their genders, they are not fully able to change because part of gender is being socialized into that gender. There are some parts of gender that cannot be taught, but you simply know because you have been socialized into that gender.
One part of the article that stuck out to me was the information about Lara Croft. I have seen Lara Croft, Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life, and I thought she was impressive for being so tough and intelligent, but I also recognized the fact that she was what many men would find attractive. When she originally debuted, she was seen as a “pornographic technopuppet” by many people, but now she is seen as more of a tough, capable, sexy, adventurous, female heroine. Many men see her now as a drag queen almost. They see her as an opportunity to “wear” a female identity. Virtual gender has greatly changed the way that may people see gender.
