When I Was Growing Up-Wong

This poem is about a Chinese girl wishing she were white. The writer talks about how she longed to look and feel like Americans. She speaks about pretty little white girls with cashmere sweaters, and that she thought she should have all the things they did.

This poem was very sad to me. It’s sad to think that people really feel like that.  I’ve always been really proud of where I came from, and I feel like everyone should  be. However, I understand how living in America would make a person of another ethnicity feel the way Wong felt.
