When I was Growing Up/ Wong

This poem is about an Asian American wanting to be something that she is not. When growing up she wanted to be white because she thought that white people were better than she was. She thought her sisters had fair skin and were better than she because they were praised for the color of their skin and she was darker. She seen the pretty girls in magazines and the girls with finer things and she thought that she should have those things too, and maybe it would make her just like the pretty white girls.

Reading this poem makes me depressed and sad. It makes me feel bad for the girl too. Not only is she not comfortable in her own skin, she thinks that being another ethnicity would make her better. Its sad to see that some people wish to be something that they are not. A certain skin tone doesn’t make you better than someone else.
