Opression/ Frye

Frye’s article “Oppression” opens every woman’s eyes and possibly even men that reads her work. The piece explains and gives many examples of how women are in a damned if you do, damned if you don’s situation. Frye reveals the ugly truth about how women are looked at and treated with no happy median. One of the examples used in the article revolves around a woman’s sexuality. If a female is sexually active she is almost always called a whore, easy, or a slut. If a woman is not sexually active, however, she is looked at as if there is something wrong with her and she is “weird”. Thankfully we have writers like Frye that will speak of what society is like.

“Oppression” really made me think deeper about situations that I have experienced or have witnessed. I always new that things were this way and there was no way to “win”, but seeing this in  a another point of view hit me even harder. This was one of the articles I let some of my friends read because I thought it was that interesting and true. No matter what other people try to say or convince us, this is the way women are viewed. Females are viewed in a negative way and trapped in with being wrong no matter if we are strong, weak, sexual, not sexual, educated, or not educated.

  1. The Frye article is illuminating and depressing, indeed, but essential for every woman to under sand that she is not alone and how we’re all between a rock and a hard place—in this thing together.
