First of all, this was the best article so far, hands down. Steinem illustrates a vision of what the world would be like if men were to have periods instead of women. In her hilarious article, men still viewed themselves as more powerful and superior to women. She described the differences in opinion between right-wing politicians and military men to those of left-wing politicians and male radicals. She also spoke of several occupations in which we would still not be qualified to perform; thinking of how men would contort the situation to justify our inability to occupy political office, be priests or rabbis, or be in the Army somewhat pissed me off, however I totally agree with what she was saying. The views of liberals and intellectuals also raised my blood pressure, simply because it is merely another way that men could say that we are inferior or of less intelligence. Best, but gross, quote:
“Street guys would brag (“I’m a three-pad man”) or answer praise from a buddy (“Man, you lookin’ good!”) by giving fives and saying, “Yeah, man, I’m on the rag!”.” (Steinem 254).
I loved this article! Her points were well thought out and written in a voice that made this reading very much enjoyable. Her explanation of the world if men bled once a month instead of women was humorous but still got me to think about how they could turn it around to claim that they were/are still the more-powerful sex. My favorite part was her ending, and I thought most important, point: If men could menstruate, the justifications for their authority could go on forever, IF we let them (254).
