In “If Men Could Menstruate,” Steinem explores what the world would be like if men menstruated instead of women. She suggests many scenarios in which menstruation is widely embraced and held as a common, “boast-worthy, masculine event.” In this alternate reality, men look down on women because they do not have this privilege. This article was written to show that we live in a male dominated culture and that even if things were different, it really wouldn’t be, and women must stand up for their rights.
I found this article quite entertaining. I really enjoyed the lighthearted scenarios that she presented to make her point. My favorite one was “Street guys would brag (‘I’m a three-pad man’) or answer praise from a buddy (‘Man, you lookin’ good!’) by giving fives and saying, ‘Yeah, man, I’m on the rag!’”. The thought of this made me laugh and imagine a world that openly embraced menstruation like this scenario. I think that Steinem exaggerated in order to stress that we live in a culture that often accepts that if it’s man it’s better.
