Parenting and Foster Care

A story from Chapter Eleven that I was particularly interested in was “Too Poor to Parent.” Since my mother works for the Department of Children Services here in Tennessee, I have been introduced to foster care systems just by visiting her at her offices every now and again as a child. Many people see my mom and her workers as evil for them wanting to take their children away. Unfortunately, these people don’t see the bigger pictures. They don’t see that people like my mother are trying to help these families and really have their well being in their best interest. Children get taken into custody for many different reasons involving monetary issues and abuse, with poverty being the leading cause of children ending up in foster care. I don’t feel that states try to do this to belittle families and mothers, but I feel that they are just looking out for the best interest of the children. I feel that if a mother or father truly cared about the future for their children they would want what is absolutely best for them in the long run. Despite the fact that many of these kids taken into custody and end up being adopted by a new family eventually, there are many that do have the privilege to go back to their parents once needs have been met by the guardians.
