Half The Sky

I am so grateful that Half the Sky was shown to our class. The movie introduced controversial issues that globally need to be recognized and addressed. The first segment that focused on female genital mutilation hit me the hardest. The fact that 130 million women have been circumcised, breaks my heart and infuriates me at the same time! The rational for female genital mutilation is in no way strong enough to support this painful and dangerous act. According to the movie, the Somalians perform FGM because it is a very important tradition. If a women isn’t circumcised, she is considered disposible.In my eyes, A tradition that causes excruciating pain, birthing difficulty, and vaginal problems was never worth implementing in the first place. The tradition was set (by men) because the Somalians wanted to keep their women from becoming loose, and to lower sex drive. However, FGM is performed when the girl is 5-8 year old. WHAT 5-8 YEAR OLD IS GOING AROUND TRYING TO HAVE SEX?!?!. There is no logic in this explanation. I believe the men implemented this tradition to find another way to be dominant over women. This movie made me thankful for the society in which I live, and to also speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.
