Before watching Half the Sky, I already knew that many women were being treated terribly around the world, just by watching the news. However, I did not realize to what extent. The part of the movie that had the biggest impact on me, was the female genital mutilation (FGM). I had heard of this before, but I never really learned enough about it, because it infuriated and made me sick to even think about it. It breaks my heart to know that the women in this society consider this a tradition and that it is alright. Most of the girls in the film were looking forward to the day that they get circumcised, because it is praised and celebrated in their communities. This “tradition” is ridiculous, and they even said that their religion does not require it. Ultimately, They do this to lower their sex drive, keep their chastity, and to keep them under control. 130 million women have experienced FGM around the world, and 3 million girls are at risk for FGM every year. This number blows my mind. There was a woman who was interviewed and she was known as “the cutter,” because she was the one that would go around hacking of the children’s private parts. She said that she performed “10-12” of these circumcisions everyday. FGM causes so many problems for women, problems that should never even exist.
