While I thought the Miss Representation documentary was nice and had lots of inspiring music, I REALLY liked the segment on the damsel-in-distress trope from video games (shocking, right?). The fact that women are so sexualized within video games has always been distressing to me, so I tend to stick to games where the women can actually DO things. The Last of Us, Beyond Two Souls, Mrs. Pacman. Games where women are wearing at least 90% of their clothes AND are important to the game because they can wield a weapon, use magic abilities, or help the game progress in general. I honestly think game developers are getting better about that, but maybe for the wrong reasons: overused theme vs actually caring about how women are perceived. Regardless, leaps HAVE been made. It’s only a matter of time before gaming turns away from the male gaze and towards equality of gender/characters completely.
