Marriage in society
We all have been raised believing and accepting what is considered normal in the society we were born. That includes marriage. We are taught since we are children what a normal and healthy marriage is. However, we should know that the conception of marriage varies from one society to another. We watched a video in class about an ancient society in the mountains where is socially acceptable for a woman to have several husbands. While one would be working at home, the others would be working outside home. We also know that other societies, like mormons, believe in a marriage where the husband gets to marry several women. And of course, there are more and more societies where homosexual marriages are becoming more common.
So what is a normal marriage? It depends. The anthropologist in the video said that we all needed to be more open about the norm. We needed to accept that there are many different kinds of people, personalities and societies in the world and we should not judge, just basing ourselves in what we think it is the norm. I agree with this opinion in the sense that what works for one person, may not work for another. Marriage is an important bound and it should be free and not shameful for whoever wants to get involved in this way. However, I also think that we should avoid letting this freedom hide problems of abuse and coercion. We should adopt freedom of choice, but only if it is really a free choice.
