The legalization of sex-working has recently been brought to my attention. Throughout my Woman Studies class the other day we discussed how sex working was legal in certain cities in Europe. What exactly is sex working? A sex worker is paid to engage in sexually explicit behavior which involve varying degrees of physical contact with clients. Many have different rules that they follow just based on personal preferences. For example, some will never kiss their client, some prefer to have dinner and a date before, and then other prefer to just get to business. Now that we know what a sex worker is, would you agree that it is acceptable to hire a sex worker for an individual that has a mental disability such as: Down syndrome, paraplegic, or any other mental defect.
In Woman Studies class, we watched a documentary that focused on sex workers giving their services particularly for people with mental disabilities. Many of the individual’s moms that have a mental defect, encouraged their children to engage in sexual activities with sex workers. The moms that were in the documentary stated that just because their children isn’t considered to be “normal” doesn’t mean that they don’t have sexual desires. So my question to you: Is it right to condone people with mental defects to participate in sexual acts? Is it unethical? Does it set the people up that have metal disabilities to experience different emotional attachments that they wouldn’t normally have to deal with if they weren’t exposed to that type of situation?
