Half the Sky

Half the Sky really opened my eyes to how women are treated throughout the world. I knew that rape and prostitution were frequent horrors that women faced, but I had no idea how serious female genital mutilation is in other countries. Women are basically treated as second class citizens. It broke my heart to learn that maternal mortality unnecessarily claims the life of one woman every 90 seconds. For the most part, that is not because adequate healthcare is not available. It is simply because women are not seen as entitled to men; therefore, they do not receive necessary healthcare. It was simply remarkable to see women in several countries standing up for their rights and impacting the women around them. However, they are not able to make a difference completely on their own. We in America are lucky, but we have to make change.
