I never really thought much about what it was like to be a woman in today’s society, here and around the world, until taking this class. One topic we discussed in class were the awful acts done to women every single day. After watching Half the Sky, I became more aware of the cruelty and hardships that women face in other countries from forced prostitution to extreme female genital mutilation. What is acceptable about either of those things? Why is such little value placed on women? Why do the women not get a say? These are the questions I found myself asking and wanting answers to. Another class topic that resonated with me as a female was the value of virginity. There has always been such high standards for women but not for men. I have never quite understood this. Why should a woman have to be pure when a man can sleep with as many women as he wants? Such double standards have always been placed on virginity. The world used to be and still is an unfair place for women. Will this ever change?
