Watching “Killing Us Softly” really made me think about the role that media has on women and women’s self-esteem. You do not realize how large of an impact media is having until you consciously make yourself think about. You can say that the media does not influence you or your self-worth, but if you said that, you would be lying; the media is everywhere and it subconsciously permeates our every thought. This fact almost disgusts me, especially considering the content of the media. The media portrays woman that appear perfect. This gives woman and men both, unrealistic expectations and goals. Fewer than 5% of real women have model bodies! Not to mention, many of the images of women used in media have been pieced together from several different women to create one “perfect woman.” In my opinion, this is appalling and detrimental to a woman’s outlook on her entire life. Since America is “the greatest country on earth”, our media should be encouraging our woman to love themselves for who they are, not what they look like.
